Last Wednesday (14th) we took ourselves along to London's Soho for a much anticipated visit to the home of Heni the art book publishers. The reason being the latest solo show by Irish artist Conor Harrington, Watch Your Palace Fall. The show is both a display of new work made up of 10 paintings and studies and the launch of Conor's first career spanning monograph.
The colours Conor uses are vivid and exciting and coupled with the painted out faces bring the action and movement of the subject's body to the fore. There is a powerful energy to these works helped in no small way by the scale of the paintings, which range from large to "where on earth would you put that" but you would expect no less from an artist that paints walls you couldn't access without a cherry picker.
According to the press release "Harrington’s vivid work draws inspiration from classical painting, combining realistic brushstrokes with the raw energy of abstraction. Using large-scale canvas and city walls, Harrington’s scenes often depict dreamlike battles featuring military-inspired characters reminiscent of Renaissance imagery."
And according to Conor "These paintings are a nod to political deceit, the lies and half truths told to assume a role and gain power, the prevalence of social media selves at the expense of the real self and the graffiti alter ego, acquiring a pseudonym and hiding your true identity"
There follows a handful of photos from the well-attended opening night. The show runs until 9th October.
There will be a chance to meet the artist and get your book signed at the official launch on Sunday 2nd October from 11.30 am - 2pm.
